You know him as Mike Stewart, but long before Mike ran a race car of his own he was part of an organization called Christy racing. Christy Racing was a family business through and through. Garth Christy was head of it all and the reason for why Mike races today. Garth was Mike’s grandpa and the two of them were inseparable. Grandpa’s first race car was not number 11, but most all of them were. Friday and Saturday nights were most definitely spent at the race track. The entire family was in some way involved. The ladies and kids were in the stands cheering loudly and the men were on the track doing what they do best. The men on the track were mostly Grandpa and Joseph Stewart, Mike’s dad, however Donna Stewart, Mike's mom also enjoyed running in the powder puff races. They ran almost every class imaginable throughout the years. The “purple people eater” as the cars were referred to took a fair share of checkered flags. The most remarkable sight was seeing two to three purple 11 cars on the track at one time, and rest assured they would bring home the one-two finish! What started as a very small one car operation grew into a name and car that could be recognized all over western Pennsylvania. Mike spent most of his summer either in the garage with Dad and Grandpa working on the cars or on the track on race night. There is racing running through his blood stream and will forever carry along the pride in which Christy racing instilled so many years ago. So now as Grandpa has passed on and Dad is now pit crew chief we see the complete evolve of how come Mike races that purple number 11 and the pride resting upon his chest while in the drivers seat.
